Comment of the week: “A city of anchored boats”
The first thing that we learnt about the different islands of the Caribbean was that “Christmas is celebrated in Bequia!”. When we first heard about it some years ago, we couldn’t believe that we actually would do that someday – celebrate Christmas in Bequia. But here we were, on our way to Admiralty Bay and Bequia to celebrate Christmas and also dear reunions with other kids boats that we haven’t seen since Las Palmas.
Bequia was really crowded but we managed to find a nice anchor spot close to the beach. Now the kids know how to dive and check if the anchor is set good or not. So as soon as we have turned off the engine the kids dive into the water and go snorkeling, a chore they seem to be appreciating helping us with as much as we appreciate the help! In the evening the bay looks like a city with all the anchor lights, magical!
The days have flown by, just snorkeling (28 degrees in the water), hanging out with friends on the beach and of course – having Christmas dinner at Papa’s
The memories and experiences from the Atlantic passage and ARC race have now sunken in. In hindsight there are many things we should have done differently. We were also kind of “racing” against boats with full crews, no children that needed attention. Having one of the smaller and lighter boats we suffered in the strong winds and big waves, not being able to take advantage of the conditions as the bigger boats could.
With a 4th place in our class (out of 19 boats) and a 10th place in Cruising total (out of 93 boats) we should be really proud! But since we had such a rough sail I (Jonas) feel a bit sad that we didn’t make at least a third place so our kids could get on the podium to get a prize.
Next week – will we set sail or will we stay in Bequia and celebrate New Year here as well? We haven’t decided yet! The only thing we know right now is that we love to be here and we will stay here in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for a long time.
