When planning to sand the hull to racefinish, I could not leave the saildrive and propeller the way it was. The brass on the propeller needed polishing, and the saildrive required both sanding and additional coats of epoxy.
I started with sanding the saildrive and the brass with 240 grit sandpaper. For the saildrive this was ok. However, I wish I had not sanded the brass at all. Small tiny scratches could be seen after the sanding on the brass. To make things easier, I removed all the brass and brought them home for a polishing indoors instead.
Once they were at home Sanna got to work and found some excellent ways of polishing the brass. By first using a mix of vinegar, salt and flour that was applied on the brass, a lot of the grime came off when rising the brass a couple of minutes later.
However, to get them shining steel wool, metal polish and a lot of elbow grease had to be used as well. The result was excellent. They look almost new except for the scratches that I made while sanding.
The Swedish spring is not suited for laying epoxy. When laying the first painting of epoxy with a borrowed can the mix was too thick without thinner and had to be sanded down again. During the second week of April, the winter also came back to Stockholm, which meant that I had to wait until the temperature would rise until I could lay a new first and then the second layer of epoxy.
Once I had added two new layers of epoxy with sanding in between, I could add two coats of spray can primer. This primer is specifically recommended for the prop antifouling I was planning to use. The primer only needed 60 min time between coats and after the second coat of primer, I could start with the antifouling.
I also applied the antifouling using spray can and the antifouling had an even shorter time between coats.
I was very simple to apply both the primer and antifouling. With 60 min between coats of the primer and 30 min between coats of the antifouling, everything was completed in the same evening. Even had time to do some other stuff between coats. If it will work or not, I don’t know. But if it does, I will most likely continue using this antifouling since it is so simple to apply.
